Tunes for Teaching Gazette, Summer 2011
Summertime Fun GALORE!
Dear Laurie Monopoli
We can’t always make it to the beach and enjoy the water and sand. So, bring the beach home to the kids! Begin by filling a small kiddie pool or large plastic container with water or sand. In the water you can add to the fun by tossing in some plastic measuring cups, spoons, ladles, boats, baby dolls, sponges, a toy fishing pole and plastic fish. In the sand children will enjoy plastic sifters, shovels, rakes, buckets and trucks. Use your imagination; just make sure your items are child safe.
Sift and Splash is a CD filled with songs and activities created specifically for sand and water play. You will add a new blast of creative learning, science, math, social interaction and fun to your sand and water play. This collection of interactive songs and activities will invite children to play-a-long as they sift, shape, pour and scoop.

Summer Camp Activities
Summer camps are a great opportunity for children to stay active, explore, have fun and make new friends. Theme planning is a great way to unite children in a multi-sensory experience where children can explore, play and learn.
Summer Dance Party
Who can resist a party? Especially a party where the kids can participate in everything from creating the decorations, preparing the food and even designing their own outfits!
DANCE MUSIC: Get them swinging and boogying to the beat by using songs from an era such as the 60’s flower power, disco 70’s or go for an 80's theme with a rockin' dance party. Add some fun props like hula hoops, scarves and rhythm instruments.
SNACKS: Healthy Elvis Sandwiches, Fruity Punch and Sushi Dessert Treats.
Follow this link to print out recipe cards for these and other healthy snack recipes children can make. Recipes are located on page 15 of the Kindness Counts curriculum.
DECORATIONS: Make a disco ball by covering a large Styrofoam ball with aluminum foil. Insert an open hanger so the hook is facing up and hang it in the center of the room. Children can make paper chain streamers using strips of colorful construction paper.
ART: Craft your groovy attire by making simple tie dye shirts using 100% cotton, white t-shirts and Tulip One Step Dye Kits, which can be found at most craft stores. They contain everything needed to create several shirts. You simply water down your t-shirt, add cold water to the dye bottle and decorate. The kits come in a variety of vibrant colors. This is permanent dye so use all necessary precautions to protect the space, surface and children from possible spills and splashes. Accessories can include colorful bandanas, funky glasses and groovy beads.
GAMES: Twister, Hopscotch, Telephone and Red Light/Green Light.

Summer TOP PICK Fan Video!
Tony Chestnut
Tony Chestnut is a popular song performed by children at family performances and graduations. This preschool program really practiced the movements for this song. They don’t miss a word, beat or a step -- even when the song picks up speed!
